The effects to our environment of fumes from vehicles are well known. Air pollution is rife in many traffic-congested cities worldwide, with the toxicity of petroleum and diesel emanating from countless exhausts.

Thankfully, there are now more alternative sources of fuel than ever from which we can choose. No longer are we bound by fossil fuels to keep our cars going; there are numerous greener sources of energy that will do the same job in a far more environmentally-fashion. From hydrogen to electricity, biodiesel to liquefied natural gas, the options for environment-conscious motorists are wide-ranging.

The one major drawback of alternative car fuels is their availability. Even with more and more sources appearing, quite a few of the alternatives are still difficult to find, and the experience of running out of fuel in the middle of nowhere is not a pleasant one. Let’s hope that the abundance of alternative energy sources will grow and that we will be decreasingly reliant on fossil fuels.

This infographic from Irish company Southside Motor Factors identifies a number of alternative car fuels and pinpoints the main advantages and drawbacks of each. Which is the right one for you? Take a look at this excellent, neatly-summarized guide to help with your decision.
